Shit We Missed This Week: 4th August 2023

*We didn’t miss it, we just didn’t post about it, so we are now.

Shit we missed this week is your weekly wrap-up of stories that were not covered on the main feed of The Introvert Archive - because I am one person and cannot possibly cover every single news, lifestyle, or women’s health story that I want to. We’ll round out the week with five news pieces, five tidbits and five of more of the sugary pop culture stories from the week that was.

All weekly recaps will be available in written form and as a podcast for accessibility.

Here is the shit we missed during the week of August 4, 2023.

News Stories

  1. Last week an Australian Defence Force helicopter with four airmen on board crashed off the coast of Queensland. Captain Danniel Lyon, Lieutenant Maxwell Nugent, Warrant Officer Class 2 Joseph Laycock and Corporal Alexander Naggs were on board.  On Thursday it was confirmed that human remains had been found in the extensive search for the chopper and its crew.

The remains were found with the wreckage of the MRH-90 Taipan helicopters cockpit, on the seabed, approximately forty metres under water. A remotely operated underwater vehicle was used to find the wreckage, but Lieutenant General Greg Bilton from the ADF has said that “due to the nature of the debris field positive identified location of the remains is unlikely to occur until we recover more of the wreckage.”

  2. A former childcare worker from Queensland has been charged with 1,623 child abuse offences against 91 children. The 45-year-old man was charged by the Australian Federal Police, who have had him in custody since last August. The charges include 136 counts of rape and 110 counts of sexual intercourse with a child under the age of ten. The offences were committed in Brisbane, Sydney and overseas between 2007 and 2022.

The man recorded all of the offences on his phone and camera, which police have used to identify the children, with them being “highly confident” that all victims in Australia have been identified. The AFP is currently working with overseas law enforcement offices to determine the identity of four children who were allegedly offended against at an overseas location.

  3. On Monday, the findings of an inquiry into the trial of Bruce Lehrmann were handed down to the ACT Government. Late last year a letter from the ACT’s Director of Public Prosecutions Shane Drumgold was the driving force behind the inquiry. In the letter, he claimed that police had pressured him into not charging Bruce Lehrmann, and alleged political interference. He also wrote about there being a “too close relationship” between senior police and the defence.

While the report is yet to be released publicly, the ABC, who have seen the report have confirmed that the allegations made by Shane Drumgold, that were the reason for the inquiry were “wholly false and without any rational basis.”

  4. In June, Brett Button was behind the wheel of a coach transporting 35 wedding guests from Lovedale to Singleton in the Hunter Valley. In what was a horror rollover, ten passengers lost their lives with more injured. Two days after the crash Button had appeared in Cessnock Local Court, charged with 20 driving offences, including ten counts of dangerous driving occasioning death and ten counts of negligent driving occasioning death.

It has now been revealed that an extra 43 charges will be laid formally on the 9th of August when he faces court again. The new charges include nine charges of alleged dangerous driving and nine of negligent driving occasioning grievous bodily harm, as well as 25 new charges of causing bodily harm by misconduct. This means that he is now accused of 63 offences in total.

  5. To finish the news section on a lighter note…On Monday 4.7 million people tuned in to watch the incredible win of the Matildas over Canada in the FIFA Womens World Cup. This huge number makes it the most-watched TV program on Channel 7 so far this year. The Matildas took home the win in the high-pressure match, beating the Canadians 4 nil.

The Matildas have topped Group B in the group matches, meaning that they will next play Denmark, the winners of Group D. The game will be held on Monday the 7th of August at Stadium Australia in Sydney.
